Working
for the Safety of the Mountain Porter
In
1997, a young Nepali mountain porter employed by a trekking company
got very sick. I took about 30 hours for him to die, after he was
paid off and sent down alone.
IPPG
was formed to prevent these recurring tragedies.
IPPG
is involved in the following activities: Working with the
trekking industry, individual trekkers, government bodies, NGOs,
and the international media to promote the safety and well being
of trekking porters.
To support such groups as the Manang Rescue Fund (MRF) and Nepal
Himalayan Guide Association who work in the field of porter safety.
To raise money and equipment for the Porter Clothing Bank in Nepal,
and initiative of IPPG and HEC (Himalayan Explorers Club) and
to set up a Porter Relief Fund to help injured porters and/or
their dependants.
IPPG
Organizational Structure
IPPG
has a minimum of organization and bureaucracy. There is no membership
as such and anyone who is interested can become involved by donating
or by propagating IPPG's aims. This can be done by lobbying trekking
companies, government and media, and by complaining loudly about
any mistreatment of trekking porters. All we ask is that you check
in with your country representative in your country contact the
International Coordinator.
Accountability
Accounts
are sent to the International Coordinator by all representatives.
These are published annually in the IPPG newsletter along with reports
of activities.
How
Do I Contact IPPG?
Contact
IPPG, for more information, or to send personal accounts of trekking
porters' misadventures, make suggestions or send a donation.
