IPPG
Dr Trish Batchelor Australia
The
International Porter Protection Group (IPPG) is a volunteer
organisation, which has as its aim the improvement of conditions,
particularly in relation to health and safety, of mountain porters
in the tourism industry. These aims are achieved by lobbying, education,
monitoring and direct action through support of clothing banks,
the construction of shelters and a rescue post. IPPG is run entirely
by volunteers with a minimum of bureaucracy.
All
monies raised are spent directly on our various projects or to support
other porter NGOs. Dr Trish Batchelor was involved in establishing
the porter rescue post and shelter in Machermo, at 4400 meters in
the Everest region in 2003.
This
rescue post requires volunteer doctors to staff it each Himalayan
trekking season (March-May and September-November). She will
talk about IPPG, the Machermo project and volunteer opportunities
with the project. www.ippg.net
