Welcome to our website on travel medicine and sports medicine.

We started this web site as a way of informing our patients about relevant topics on preventative health that were difficult to encompass in brief office visits in our clinic. At our clinic, we would give information from self-published handouts and information from pharmaceutical companies.

Self-publishing patient information on a website gives us more freedom to explore topics in more detail.

In the early days of the web there were few comprehensive resources and we have found that the quality and depth of on line travel medicine resources have very much improved.

Many travelers self research their journeys and are well informed.

We hope that our website will continue to help people find the information they need but we are also trying to maintain links to the best sources we can find.

We have not allowed sponsorship from any commercial companies on our site and you will not find the logos of any pharmaceutical manufacturers on our site.

Links
Likewise we have links to Canadian, Australian, European, and American websites that offer much information but may contradict each other. We suggest visitors follow guidelines specific to their own countries.

There may be no true definitive authority regulating every aspect of travel medicine however there is much agreement on most issues.

We try to research and check each site as best we can and the strength of this site is attributable to many of the excellent resources and people who have helped us.

Travel Medicine
Travel Medicine by definition is the prevention and treatment of illnesses associated with traveling but this may be widely interpreted by a variety of clinics.

We define travel medicine to involve the health of travelers before, during and after their trip.

Traditionally clinicians have focused on the prevention of infectious illnesses mainly by advice and immunizations.

In the last several years there has been an increase in the number of choices available for travelers- different anti-malarials, different brands of vaccines, and more is known about the nature and distribution of illnesses. One famous Travel Medicine doctor ruefully observed, "Travellers today may only be able to afford their vaccines but not their trip".

We have tried to present the appropriate information without becoming to technical so that you may make informed decisions about your own health keeping in mind the benefits, costs, and adverse events.

We specialize in keeping abreast of the latest information available and giving our clients an informed choice of what they want since cost as well as need must be factored in.

It should be emphasized that many very cheap common sense habits and precautions are perhaps even more important than relying on expensive immunizations to keep travellers healthy.

Professional Organizations

We are affiliated locally with many specialists in Pediatrics, Infectious diseases, Surgery, Internal Medicine and others.

Other affiliations include:

American College of Sports Medicine
Wilderness Medicine in Manitoba
International Society of Travel Medicine
Wilderness Medical Association

These organizations have contributed research towards improving understanding of unusual medical situations and continue to do so. We encourage anyone highly interested in these specialties to visit these websites and consider joining their organizations.

Our Clinic information line 1-204-453-9107.

Clients may call us with questions about our services and to book appointments.

We are glad to tell what the costs of each service are but cannot go into extensive details over the phone.

On the phone, we can provide a broad overview of the commonly suggested immunizations for your itinerary and a general cost estimate.

For those wanting more information we suggest booking an appointment in person or checking the website.

Our medical staff will give extensive medial analysis at your appointment.

Many, but not all of our services are not covered through Manitoba Health Care so there may be an office fee.

Travel Vaccinations

We administer all the common immunizations for travel, including yellow fever, at our clinic.

Obviously every person comes in with a different medical history and distinct itinerary so that any advice we suggest over the phone is for an itinerary and is not personal medical advice.

Individuals needing specific advice must be assessed in person.

Some vaccines are very strongly recommended while others are not.

Some are even discouraged because we may feel there is not enough time to receive protection from them.

It is only when our medical staff reviews a person individually that we can remark on what is either required or recommended in the context of their geographic destinations; activities planned or anticipated; and medical health or allergies in each patient.

We establish a discourse during our visits so that we can go over the benefits, limits and price of each vaccine so that our clients may have informed consent for everything they receive.

At each visit we give a record of all immunizations administered including booster dates if required.

On-Line resources for Travelers who wish to research their itinerary

Many travelers may wish to look up their risk of diseases by country themselves and this is now made easy by some very good websites.
Both the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) http://www.cdc.gov/travel/outbreaks.htm

And World Health organization (WHO) www.who.int are very good places to start as they contain very detailed and frequently updated information and are often quoted as the source of other recommendations. They are the most likely places to find news of new outbreaks and news bulletins.
Another well written website for travellers is www.travmed.com which also sells useful traveler supplies. .
