Our
Services
Sports Medicine
Sports medicine is the branch of medicine dealing with athletic injuries and
their remedial therapy in order to return to sport and daily function.
Studies have shown that it is easier to keep someone healthy than to treat them
after they have become sick or injured. Many different groups have used the
term "Sports medicine" for their own niche with groups ranging from fitness
centres, athletic therapists (trainers), physiotherapists, chiropractors and
others all practicing "Sport medicine".
For our purposes we will restrict its use to refer to Family Physicians, Orthopedists
or Sports Medicine physicians practicing allopathic evidence based medicine
for a population of amateur or professional athletes.
Manitoba Health covers these insured visits so there is no charge.
We only accept appointments but can squeeze in people with urgent problems or
injuries as same day appointments. We no longer see patients for Workers Compensation
or Autopac injuries but can refer them to other clinics that do.
Travel Medicine Costs
Manitoba Health does not insure travel medicine services so we must charge clients
for our service as well as the cost of individual immunizations. We will provide
detailed receipts including drug information numbers (DIN) that may assist patients
with insurance coverage.
Our prices include:

to fill this out

Our charges for patients without Canadian Health Coverage are:
Simple visit $20
Complicated or Full physical $50

Please note that house calls are not something we would normally do. Our
travel clinic can assess travelers in distress and if necessary will refer
them for appropriate care. The waiting list to see physicians is long in Manitoba
but for Emergencies and significant problems we can help facilitate referrals.
Other specialists, blood and x-ray facilities will also charge for their services
and this can be expensive. We are located nearby St Boniface hospital.
Pre-trip Evaluations
Often we have had people asking for clearance for traveling to specific areas
of medical concern. People with heart conditions, cancer treatments, or any
other medical conditions often wish to know if it is safe for them to travel.
This may include regular travel aboard commercial aircraft; travel to remote
destinations and to areas that cause unusual physiology such as high altitude
areas and scuba environments. In the vast majority of regular travel we clear
individuals but in some cases they should not go ahead with their plans for
travel. For the assessment of medical problems, including regular medication
refills, we see patients as a regular doctor's office and Manitoba Health
covers these visits. We do ask for clients to book physicals in advance so
that we have enough time to cover all issues.
We do complete Scuba physical clearance forms for a fee. We encourage our
clients to stabilize medical conditions with their own physicians before they
leave in order to minimize any future problems, but our medical team can help
with last minute problems (e.g. lost prescriptions, infected ears) and will
be glad to be of service.
Pre-Operative Physicals
We also assist patients requiring last minute physicals for other purposes
such as Driver's Physicals and Pre Operative physicals. We understand that
it is very difficult for Manitobans to get a last minute physical required
for surgery so we have made arrangements with local surgeons to see their
patients if necessary. We will fax all pre-operative forms on the same day.
We do not have lab-work, EKG, or X-ray in our building but have several nearby
clinics in the neighbourhood.
Help for Travelers on their trips
With the onset of the Internet and near universal access to the Internet patients
travelling abroad may contact us. Email and Internet are not reliable 100%
of the time and we never give advice to people we cannot examine. To keep
our active travellers healthy we recommend they contact a reputable local
physician recommended through their Canadian (or other country's) Embassy.
Alternatively the International Society of Travel Medicine keeps a website
of travel clinics at
www.istm.org where travelers may find clinics.
We are also a part of IAMAT the International Association for Assistance to
Travelers www.iamat.org This group is fee
to join and will help travelers find physicians abroad at standardized rates.
Our clinic is similarly available to see travellers coming to Manitoba who
are also seeking medical aid within our Healthcare system.
Travelers Insurance
We strongly recommend proper traveler's insurance to cover emergencies. For
those embarking on remote or inaccessible travel we remind you to check what
types of services are covered including ambulance and helicopter evacuations.
Returned Travelers
Our clinic also services returned travelers. We will expedite appointments
forsick returned travelers who may have acquired an illness abroad. If you
have an illness that you suspect could be a tropical infection, parasite or
other malady please contact us and tell us the nature of you illness. We must
remind those who are very ill not to wait and to go to their nearest Emergency
department.
(One exception to this is in the suspicion of a highly contagious illness
such as SARS or Avian Flu. Patients must tell our receptionists their complaints
in advance so they can be referred to the nearest appropriate facility where
they may be safely examined without risk to other patients or staff. Media
and Public Health designate these areas during a perceived crisis)
Helping Travelers to
Canada
Our clinic is also available to help assist travelers visiting Manitoba. If
you are traveling and need assistance we will try to determine how we may
help you. We subscribe to the IAMAT guidelines for helping travelers.
If your problem is something we cannot help with we will help you contact
an appropriate caregiver nearby.
We had a young man from Australia who had a tear in the meniscus cartilage
of his knee and was unable to bend it, but was due to go home the next week,
which would have been extremely painful during the long trip home. We were
able to arrange an arthroscopic surgery through one of the local surgical
centres and expedite him home pain free. He had adequate insurance to cover
the surgery and the surgeon was happy to do a straight foreword procedure
with guaranteed payment. Successful outcomes are not always so common but
we will try to help you to speed up processes.
Post Trip Illnesses
We will review risks for other diseases when appropriate, including malaria,
non- vaccinatable diseases (schistosomiasis, leishmaniasis, trypanosomiasis
among others), environmental concerns: arctic/subarctic, desert, nautical,
aviation (at present we do not clear pilots or aircrew), and scuba A reasonable
estimate of the cost of visits and vaccines will be given over the phone but
our staff has been told to not give any personal advice over the phone. Our
patients may book follow-ups at the time of their visit or they may be placed
on our call back list where our receptionist will phone and remind you to
book an appointment at the time appropriate for your booster, if you wish.
Expeditions and Group Excursion Support
We provide general information through our information line but for those
wishing for more we would review the medical, logistic, and general safety
issues regarding group travel. We also make educational presentations for
group participants. For estimates on these services please contact us. We
also have physicians and nurses available to accompany expeditions personally.
For those interested please contact us
Personal Safe Needle Kit
We have created Safe Needle Kits for business and recreational travelers.
These contain all the needles necessary for emergency care in far away countries.
The traveller will carry these sterile kits, which allow qualified medical
professionals to administer medications. These single use needles are intended
to reduce the risk of blood acquired diseases such as HIV and Hepatitis B.
Instructions for proper use in 12 languages are included.
Post-trip Re-examinations and Screening
We encourage all of our clients to contact us as early as possible if they
are sick after their trip. We have kept some time reserved for return patients
and would like to see you on the day of return if required. Illnesses such
as rashes, traveller's diarrhea and mild injuries are commonly seen in our
return patients, but more worrisome problems including-unexplained fevers,
weight loss, coughs or other possible symptoms, may be suggestive of diseases
such as malaria, dengue fever, or tuberculosis among others. If available
we will try to see patients the same day, but if not, travelers should go
to their nearest appropriate emergency department. Not all illnesses after
travel are travel related, but we also work with family physicians in the
community. If an exotic concern is suspected we will do appropriate tests
and make referrals to specific specialists if necessary. We cannot see ongoing
family medical problems but for those without doctors we have names of local
physicians accepting patients for problems outside our focus.
Cruise Ship Medicine
Travelers embarking on Cruise vacations should also consider immunizations
for the countries visited in port as well as for contact with crew and other
passengers Travelers going on cruises may have concerns about seasickness,
risk of outbreaks and other concerns, which may be addressed during their
immunization visit. Dr Podolsky has worked as Chief Medical Officer aboard
the MS Jubillee and MS Tropicale for Carnival Cruise Lines and has written
a section on cruise ship medicine. Please visit
our section on Cruise Ships.
Scientific Meetings
Our annual Wilderness
Medicine Meeting brings various allied Health Care Providers together to cover
many interesting subjects that are infrequently discussed or understood by
the General Public and Health Care Professionals. Although professionals-
nurses, pharmacists, dentists physicians and veterinarians usually attend
these meetings, they are also open to the general public. They have been successfully
locally and we are scheduling future events on location in Churchill, Manitoba
with a Polar Bear Safari, and in Havana, Cuba with an International faculty
and audience.
Lecturing and Educational Services
Our clinic has developed a year-long series of educational seminars for physicians,
nurses and other Health Care professionals. Our annual meeting is in April
and we are planning future meetings in Churchill, Manitoba and in Havana,
Cuba.
We have also lectured for the Canadian Family Medicine College and Wilderness
Medical Society and have future engagements with other Continuing Medical
Organizations. Our staff is available to lecture on a variety of Medical topics.
For inquiries please contact us and we can develop a program to suit your
needs.
Non profit Organizations
Our clinic will occasionally support or work with various non-profit organizations
to help improve their visibility, although we do not specifically endorse
or condemn any group by inclusion or omission. We are willing to help non-profit
organizations by sponsoring special talks throughout the year providing their
intention and message is relevant to travelers or to charitable work and is
not pursuant of any other agendas.
Business Health
We recognize that all businesses- small, medium and large offices have specific
needs that are unique to the nature of their set up, and we offer solutions
that will improve efficiency, decrease absenteeism and improve overall worker
health. Many of these ideas are not new, but as a private medical clinic specializing
in immunization, infectious diseases and rehabilitation health we offer a
unique flexibility through our programs. We work towards preventing problems,
rather than trying to fix them after they have happened.. We can assist businesses
as groups, just as we evaluate travelers as individuals. If a business shares
a common problem (for example the need for flu immunization or travel to the
same destination) we are able to see them as groups efficiently. Since this
will take less time than if we were to assess them for different problems
individually we are also able to give group discounts to decrease cost, which
is a significant barrier in immunization. Specific groups require specific
assessments and recommendations and may fall into one or more of our programs:
Influenza
"Flu at work"
Immunization
against the Flu (Influenza)
Hepatitis
B Protection in the Workplace
Hepatitis
A Restaurant Protection Program
Yellow
Fever Immunization @ work
Meningitis
